We’re a week into May so this free publicity post is a bit late. But not to worry. Because the idea behind these 100% free publicity ideas goes beyond any calendar-driven deadlines. The goal here is to get you thinking! In new ways. In new directions. And all with the same outcome: give the publicity of your business a winning edge. Something that breakthroughs. And goes beyond the typical announcement. So let’s get started!
If you’ve read my previous publicity idea posts, you know that each month brings with it a calendar of “official” events. In essence, every day, every week and every month has a certain official designation. When you tie into these events, you help provide the media with pre-built content of interest to their readers, viewers and subscribers.
Even better, these publicity ideas are not dependent on media coverage alone. They’re perfect for your own content marketing needs. (You know, blog posts, videos, social media posts, etc.) In fact, you may even think of a spontaneous promotion that can bring in sales this very month.
So exactly what calendar events can we mine for content and media gold this month?

6 ideason turning these events into content and media gold…
First idea/suggestion: don’t use these events as a crutch. For example, “It’s National Fruit and Vegetables Month. Eat healthy kids!” BOOORRRRINNGG!
Instead, here are some techniques you can use for this month and for ALL future months…
The combo idea. Combine similar events. It’s “National Fruit and Vegetables Month”. It’s also “Dairy Month.” And it’s also “Professional Wellness Month.” Now say you are in the health/ fitness or wellness niche. You could invent a smoothie recipe (and name the smoothie something fun) that contains fruit, dairy (yogurt) and can made quickly and busy professionals. (You can compare why homemade smoothies are better and healthier than those bought at retail locations.)
The offbeat combo idea. This features the power of juxtaposition. Because you are combining two events that don’t seem to belong together. How about this…May is “Entrepreneur’s Do it Yourself Marketing Month” as well as “Zoo and Aquarium Month.” Say you provide training materials for marketers that want to do it themselves. You can play this a few different ways…
Way #1: Someone marketing their company the right way gets MORE free time…to take their family to the zoo or the aquarium.” (Maybe you can do a promo deal or refer them to a groupon-style coupon as an incentive.)
Way #2: Your marketing needs to stand out. You don’t want to be just another in a school of fish like you see in an aquarium. Or the marketing landscape can be a zoo. Let us help you tame your biggest marketing challenges.
Way #3: When you market your business the right way the world is your oyster. Imagine visiting the top aquariums in the world. (Like the ones in Baltimore and in Australia.)
I think you get the idea(s.) Just make sure you reference that these events are official and for May which is why you are sharing this with them now. Make sense?
